Hip Thrust Machine Problems and Fixes: Pad Pain, Pivot Play, Band Wear, and Bench Slide
Fix common hip thrust equipment problems: hip pads that bruise, pivots that develop play, resistance bands that fray, benches that slide under load, and uneven resistance feel.

Glute equipment problems announce themselves through comfort and symmetry: a pad that suddenly hurts, a pivot that clicks, one side working harder than the other. Because loads here are heavy and the contact points are personal, small faults end sessions early. This list fixes the common causes in order of frequency.
Hip pad bruises or digs in at working loads
Check pad position first: it should sit in the hip crease, not on the stomach or the hip bones. Add a quality barbell hip pad or folded mat layer as an interface, and confirm the pad bar is centered. Persistent pain at loads the machine is rated for means the pad design is your limiting factor, which is a product tier issue, not a toughness issue.
Pivot clicks or has developed side play
With the machine unloaded, re torque the pivot bolt and frame hardware in sequence, then move the arm by hand to feel where the play lives. Worn bushings show as lateral movement at the arm; they are replaceable wear parts on quality machines and should be ordered before play becomes slop.
Resistance bands show nicks, tears, or white stress marks
Retire that band from thrust loading. Band failure under stretch is sudden and the hip belt area is the worst place for it. Inspect before heavy sessions, store bands away from sunlight and sharp edges, and treat bands as scheduled consumables in your training budget.
Thrust bench slides or tips during barbell sets
Place the bench on a mat or against a wall or rack upright so it physically cannot travel, and check that its feet have intact rubber contact. A bench that moves at moderate load is a placement problem to solve before load, never a problem to brace with your back mid set.
One side feels heavier or the pad sits crooked
Count plates on both horns and confirm the hip pad or belt is centered on the pivot arm. On band machines, check both bands are the same length pairing and clipped to matching anchor points. Asymmetry in this exercise is almost always loading, not the lifter.

Questions, answered straight
How do I know if my back pad height is wrong?
If your shoulders slide down the pad at lockout, it is likely too low or too angled; if you feel perched and unstable at the top, it may be too high. Compare your seated shoulder blade measurement to the pad top as the buying guide describes.
Can I add padding to a machine hip bar permanently?
A fitted, secured pad sleeve made for the bar diameter is fine. Loose towels and foam that can shift mid rep are not; anything between you and a heavy load must be captive.
Why does my thrust feel weaker on the machine than with a barbell?
Pivot geometry changes leverage through the rep, so identical plate loads rarely feel identical between formats. Track each implements numbers separately for a few weeks and compare trends, not single sessions.
