Hip Thrust and Glute Machines

Plate loaded glute drives, hip thrust benches, and band resisted thrust machines ranked on pad height, capacity, and setup speed.

The hip thrust exposes a basic equipment problem: the best glute exercise in the gym is awkward to load with a barbell, a bench, and a pad balanced across your hips. Dedicated machines exist to remove that friction, and they split into three families. Plate loaded glute drives pivot a lever arm against your hips while your back rests on a fixed bench, giving the heaviest and most repeatable loading. Hip thrust benches and platforms simply give the barbell version a stable, correct height back support and a place to anchor bands. Band resisted machines like the Booty Sprout replace iron with very heavy elastic resistance in a footprint that slides under a bed. Each family trains the same lockout pattern; they differ in load ceiling, setup time, and how the resistance feels through the rep.

The specs that decide satisfaction are specific. Back pad height near 14 to 16 in suits most lifters for a full thrust; much higher and shorter users lose leverage, much lower and the shoulder position cramps the top of the rep. Plate loaded pivots need a capacity and horn layout that fit iron plates, and the hip pad needs to spread load without bruising at working weights. This hub ranks ten machines and benches across all three families, then separates the heavy plate loaded picks, the small space picks, and the budget picks, with full reviews of the top three, head to heads, and a buying guide on pad geometry and resistance curves.
