Our verdict

Hydrow sells consistency disguised as a rowing machine. The electromagnetic drag is smooth and genuinely quiet, the screen is large and bright, and the instructors row on real water in places you would rather be. Owners who use the library stay rowers; that is the whole thesis, and the owner themes support it. The counterweight is permanent: a membership that never ends, a closed data world, and a large machine that needs power and floor space. Buy it as a class service with hardware included and it makes sense. Buy it as hardware and it never will.

What we like

  • Electromagnetic drag feels smooth and stays library-quiet
  • Large rotating screen and a deep library of scenic, instructor-led sessions
  • Coaching cues help new rowers build form early

What to watch out for

  • Full value depends on an ongoing membership
  • Large footprint and an always-plugged-in design
  • Data ecosystem is closed compared with PM5 exports

Who it is for

Class-motivated rowers who want coaching, scenery, and quiet operation, and who accept a membership as part of the product.

Drag feel and quiet

An electromagnetic system sets resistance in software, producing an even, smooth pull with almost no mechanical sound. It imitates water drag convincingly for most rowers, though purists note it lacks the organic surge of a real tank or fan. For early-morning rows in a shared home, quiet wins arguments that feel loses.

Screen, library, and form coaching

The 22-inch display rotates for off-rower workouts, and the library mixes scenic rows, studio sessions, and strength work. Beginners praise the form instruction specifically: Hydrow teaches the stroke sequence early, which protects backs and builds speed faster than silent solo rowing.

The membership and data, stated clearly

Without an active membership the experience shrinks to basic rowing on an expensive frame, so price the machine across two or three years of membership before comparing it with a Concept2. Workout data lives mainly inside Hydrow's system; export options are limited compared with open PM5 logging.

Footprint and storage

At roughly 86 inches long it is shorter than a RowErg, and it stores upright with an optional wall mount for security. It still needs an outlet, a stable floor, and a planned corner. The Wave exists for homes where even this is too much machine.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight

Can I use a Hydrow without the membership?

Basic rowing works, but the classes, programs, and most of the screen's purpose require the membership. Treat it as required when you budget.

Is the Hydrow quiet enough for an apartment at night?

It is among the quietest full rowers made, with seat and handle sounds louder than its resistance system. A mat and smooth technique make late sessions realistic in most buildings.
