Our recommendation

Buy the BowFlex 840 if your kettlebell training is program-following and circuit-flavored, where the next movement starts in twenty seconds and the weight must change now. Buy the REP if your training is craft: cleans, snatches, get-ups, and presses where shell behavior is the workout's foundation. These are the category's two philosophies in their purest forms, and your session format, not your budget, should decide.

Change speed and setting logic

The dial changes in seconds from a tray, across six uneven settings. The REP changes by push-button inside a cast shell, across five even 2 kg settings. One optimizes the clock, the other optimizes the ladder. Notice that the REP's even ladder tops out lower, about 35 lb, while the BowFlex reaches 40 lb with gaps.

Shell feel in contact work

Molded and oversized against cast iron in shape and finish. On swings both are fine. On cleans and rack holds the REP disappears into technique while the BowFlex remains noticeable against the forearm. Beginners often prefer the BowFlex's smoothness; the difference is that experienced users rarely go back.

Choose BowFlex SelectTech 840 Kettlebell if…

  • Your sessions change weight between movements
  • You are learning kettlebell patterns and value a forgiving shell
  • You want the full 40 lb ceiling in the purchase

Choose REP Fitness REP Adjustable Kettlebell (16 kg) if…

  • Technique quality is the point of your training
  • Your programs progress in 2 kg steps
  • You prefer iron construction with nothing molded in the load path

FAQ

Questions, answered straight

Which is safer for a beginner's forearms?

The BowFlex's smooth molded shell is gentler while clean technique is developing. The better long-term answer is coaching the clean itself; no shell makes a banging clean comfortable, and the REP rewards correct technique exactly as fixed bells do.
