Weighted Vest Problems and Fixes: Bounce, Shoulder Pain Points, Strap Creep, and Odor
Fix common weighted vest problems: bouncing, riding up, shoulder pressure, uneven load, loosening straps, and sweaty shell odor.

Most vest complaints are fit and loading problems, not defects. Work through these in order before deciding a vest is wrong for you, because three of the five are free to fix.
The vest bounces when you move faster
Snug the waist closure first, then take up the shoulders, and reload adjustable vests symmetrically front to back. Bounce that survives a genuinely snug fit means the vest is too big or its load sits too low for your torso, which are sizing problems, not strap problems.
Shoulders ache early in a walk or session
Check that the load is balanced front to back; a back heavy vest pulls the shoulders constantly. Add or use the shoulder pads if your model offers them, shorten the session and build duration gradually, and wear a shirt layer under the vest to spread friction.
The vest rides up toward your neck
Usually a waist closure set too loose, or a vest too long for your torso worn over slippery fabric. Tighten at the waist, wear it over a grippier layer, and if it still climbs, the torso length is wrong for you.
Straps loosen during use
Hook and loop closures lose grip when clogged with lint: clean both sides with a stiff brush. Route strap tails through their keepers, and mark your setting with a stitch or tape dot so creep is visible early rather than felt late.
One side or corner feels heavier than the other
Empty adjustable vests fully and reload in matched pairs, front to back and left to right. In sand vests, lay the vest flat and work the fill evenly through the baffles with your hands; fill migrates toward the bottom over months of hanging storage, so store it flat.
The shell smells after a few weeks of use
Air it after every session, inside out where the design allows, and spot clean the shell per the care label. A vest stored damp in a gym bag will smell regardless of brand; a vest aired on a hook usually will not.

Questions, answered straight
My vest feels fine standing but wrong in motion. Why?
Static fit hides distribution problems that movement exposes. Test any new vest with a short walk and your actual training movements inside the return window, at working load, before committing to it.
When is a vest problem a return rather than a fix?
Torn stitching at a load bearing seam, a closure that will not hold at any setting, or weights that leak fill. Leaking sand or shot is a stop using it defect, not a maintenance task.
