Lat Pulldown Problems and Fixes: Sticky Carriages, Cable Slack, and Pad Creep
Fix common lat pulldown machine problems: carriages that stick or tilt, cables that jump pulleys, thigh pads that creep, seats that wobble, and uneven pull feel.

A lat machine tells you its health through the first inch of every pull. A sticky start, a new clunk, or pads that need resetting between sets are all early maintenance messages. This list works from the carriage outward, in the order an owner can check things with basic tools.
Carriage sticks or starts with a jerk
Clean the upright or rails the carriage runs on; chalk and dust cake exactly where the rollers pass. Check the carriage rollers for flat spots and confirm plates are loaded evenly on both horns. An uneven load tilts the carriage and mimics a mechanical fault.
Cable jumps off a pulley or rides the flange
Stop and reseat the cable in its groove, then trace the whole run for a twisted section or a pulley that has loosened and tilted. A cable that jumps once will jump again under load until the misalignment causing it is found.
Thigh pads creep upward during heavy sets
Tighten the pad post locking hardware and check that the adjustment pin passes fully through a frame hole rather than resting between them. Worn pad foam compresses and loosens the fit over time; replacement pads restore the original hold.
Seat wobbles or clicks under load
Re torque the seat mounting bolts in a cross pattern and inspect the adjustment teeth or holes for elongation. A small wobble under bodyweight becomes a big one under a heavy pulldown, so fix it at the click stage.
Pull feels heavier one session, lighter the next
Count plates on both horns and check that no plate is hanging half on the carriage from the last change. Then inspect the cable for a section riding over a pulley flange, which adds friction that feels exactly like phantom weight.

Questions, answered straight
How often should I inspect the cable?
Monthly under regular training: run a cloth along the cable and feel for broken strands or cracked coating, especially at pulley bends. Replace at the first exposed wire.
Can I lengthen the cable for more travel?
Only with a manufacturer specified cable. Length changes alter carriage rest position and stack geometry on selectorized systems and plate clearance on towers, so match the original specification.
Why does my carriage tilt when I load one side first?
Single side loading twists the carriage on its rails. Load plates alternately, heaviest first and centered, which is also how the carriage rating assumes the weight is carried.
